BACH : PASSION SELON SAINT-JEAN
Concerts | Chapelle Royale
Friday, April 3, 2020 - 08:00 PM
Description
Of Bach’s two remaining passions, the Saint John’s was the first composed, and several times reworked by the Cantor for different executions between 1724 and 1747. In Saint-Thomas of Leipzig, Bach had a choir and instrumental ensemble, well trained for the virtuosity of the arias and chorales of this rich passion and he deployed to their maximum the rhetorical effects highlighting the text and its dolorous dimension. Just one year after his arrival in Leipzig, he gave this first great masterpiece for Good Friday 1724. It was by far his largest composition until then and is today still one of the public’s favourite because of its extraordinary humanity.
